On Friday, India announced historic results of her national elections. Held once in five years, by 850 million people, the verdict was of a unanimous voice to change the current system of corruption, inefficiency and inertia in a system that was bursting with potential. The National Democratic Alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a sweeping victory in the general election of India by crossing the 300 seat mark in the 543-seat Lok Sabha or lower house of parliament. Chinese investments have long stayed on the sidelines, waiting for the Indian election results. Now, bursting with economic activity, and supported by a leader who promises change, efficiency and economic growth on the lines of China, Chinese companies are keen to unleash their investments in India, especially in the manufacturing sector. Keen on helping India to prosper along Chinese growth lines, the BJP is a strong supporter of China’s model of economic development. Mr. Modi has not only encouraged Chinese companies to set up manufacturing plants in his home state Gujarat, but has also eased the process. Additionally, he has encouraged many of his expected ministers and cabinet members to learn Mandarin. Many of whom, including Smriti Irani have learnt the emperors tongue. China’s Ambassador to India Mr. Wei Wei, has in the past few months, been visiting several Indian states, including Bihar and Madhya Pradesh that are keen to set up Special Economic Zones with Chinese aid. Housing Chinese companies, these SEZ’s are expected to utilise Chinese best practices in manufacturing to buoy Indian exports of goods. Narendra Modi’s win is expected to excel this process, striking a win – win situation — augmenting Chinese inroads into India and raising India’s economic development. Besides, the obvious economic hope, China is also glad the elections resulted in a single party victory and a stable government after 25 years. They will have one man to hold responsible and one opinion on foreign affairs. For a nation, thats tired of India’s bureaucracy, Beijing has heaved a sigh of relief. Although ties with the Congress party were strong since the time of Rajiv Gandhi, the promise of a stronger economy and efficiency within the system is good enough for China to lay out the red carpet for Modi. While the Chinese businessman in India is most affected by the news, all in all, Indias national elections haven’t been more than a stray comment within international news for the average Chinese. Just as the average Indian doesn’t know much about Chinese elections, the Indian elections haven’t caused more than a ripple in China, India’s largest trading partner. Many ordinary Chinese citizens interviewed by Inchin Closer, had little idea to no idea of the election, the candidates standing or Narendra Modi.
