Meiyang Chang to make a Bollywood film on Tibet
August 20, 2010

Third generation Chinese born and raised in India Meiyang Chang is making his mark in Bollywood. Probably the only actor of mainland Chinese descent in Bollywood, Meiyan Chang’s debut film Badmaash Company with co-actors Shahid Kapoor and Anoushka Sharma won him accolades from Rajkumar Hirani and Salman Khan. He has now signed on a second film based on the China-Tibet conflict.

“I am discussing a film right now on the China-Tibet conflict. I think it should be interesting because I don’t know much about the issue. It will also give me a chance to travel to places like Ladakh and Tibet,” Chang told PTI.

The 27 year old actors grandparents migrated to India from Hubei in the 20th century. Like his father, Chang is a dentist by profession, while his mother is a beautician. Chang shot to fame in 2007 following his extraordinary performance on the highly popular reality show Indian Idol 3, modeled along the lines of American Idol. He later went on to host the fourth and fifth seasons of Indian Idol and the second show of the Indian Premier League, India’s most watched cricket competition with Mandira Bedi and the Indian IIFA film awards. Chang has also recently been signed up by UTV’s Bindaas channel for a horror reality show titled the Chair.

Besides acting, Chang is also keen on promoting pop music in India. Besides dating Indian singer Monali Thakur, he is an avid fan of Lucky Ali and Pankaj Udhas. “I have been meeting a number of people and planning to do something experimental. It is disheartening that pop music is not popular in India. Private albums are not doing well due to piracy and lack of interest of listeners in anything beyond Bollywood,” said Chang.
